Nigerian women, led by the Women Political Participation (WPP) coalition, held a solidarity rally on Monday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. They urged lawmakers to fast-track the Special Legislative Seats for Women constitutional amendment bill to increase female political representation before the 2027 elections.
Advocates Demand Swift Action
Civil society activist Ene Obi explained that the rally aimed to commend lawmakers supporting the bill and persuade others to take a clear position. She emphasized the urgency since the bill still requires approval by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
“With INEC releasing the timetable for the 2027 elections, women need time to prepare and mobilize,” Obi said, calling Nigeria’s low female political representation “a national shame.”
Inclusion Key to Electoral Integrity
WPP Chairperson Ebere Ifendu stressed that electoral reforms must prioritize women’s inclusion. “The special seats bill corrects constitutional imbalances and strengthens governance,” she said.
Adora Jack warned that delays could cost women the chance to fully participate in 2027 elections. “Political will is incomplete without political action,” she added, recalling past advocacy efforts in 2022.
Support from Lawmakers
Yeside Olasinbur praised House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for mobilizing support. Spokesman Akin Rotimi Jr assured the protesters that the House and Senate would consider the bill alongside other pending legislation. He urged women to hold legislators accountable if progress stalls.
Solidarity Walk and Position Paper
Women from professional bodies, including FIDA and NAWOJ, carried placards, chanted slogans, and submitted a position paper urging the National Assembly not to deny women governance opportunities. The coalition plans a solidarity awards event in March to recognize lawmakers supporting the bill.
