Siminalayi Fubara on Wednesday night hosted a state banquet at Government House, Port Harcourt, to honour retired jurist Obietonbara Owupele Daniel-Kalio, the immediate past Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Asaba Division, where he urged the judiciary and political leaders to place justice and legacy above personal interests.
The event drew jurists, government officials, traditional rulers and dignitaries from across Rivers State.
Fubara: Leadership Is Measured by How It Ends
Governor Fubara said the true test of leadership lies in how service concludes. He stressed that integrity must outlive tenure.
“The message tonight is about how a career ends,” he said. “It is not about winning now; it is about how it ends.”
He explained that Justice Daniel-Kalio’s retirement brings honour to Rivers State. According to him, the moment offers lessons for young lawyers and politicians.
Furthermore, he urged leaders to defend justice at all times. He encouraged them to stand firmly on the side of truth.
“When we leave the stage, how will our story be told?” he asked.
Call for Higher Standards in Public Service
The governor also called for improved standards in governance. He noted that collective resolve can restore excellence in public institutions.
“It is about us coming together and setting standards,” Fubara said. “We must not allow personal interests to override those standards.”
He added that Justice Daniel-Kalio may have retired but remains capable of contributing to state development. Therefore, the government will continue to seek his counsel when necessary.
Ministry of Justice Praises Retired Jurist
In her welcome address, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, Vera Sam-Dike, described the event as a tribute to an illustrious son of the state.
She said Justice Daniel-Kalio served with loyalty, fairness and strong commitment to the rule of law.
According to her, his retirement marks the end of an era. However, it also celebrates a career that positively impacted many lives.
She praised his courage, intellect and wisdom. She added that the banquet symbolised appreciation and goodwill for a peaceful retirement.
Justice Daniel-Kalio Reflects on Judicial Service
Responding, Justice Daniel-Kalio thanked the governor for organising what he described as a rare state reception in his honour.
He said his years on the Bench proved deeply rewarding. Moreover, he emphasised that the judiciary stabilises every progressive society.
“Our vision is to ensure Rivers State continues to grow from strength to strength,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to guests who attended the ceremony.
Appreciation for Supporters
Governor Fubara appreciated attendees for their presence. He described the period as significant for his administration.
He acknowledged their support during critical moments.
