The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announced a movement restriction from 8 pm Friday to 6 pm Saturday in Abuja ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026. He made the announcement through a special broadcast and urged residents to participate actively in the polls.
Wike said the decision followed approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He explained that the measures would allow residents to travel to their communities and vote without disruption.
Movement Restriction and Security Measures
The minister stated that movement within the FCT would stop from 8 pm on Friday until 6 pm on Saturday. He also directed security agencies to enforce strict compliance.
According to him, the restriction will ensure order and enhance security during the election period. He urged residents to cooperate with authorities.
Furthermore, he encouraged voters to approach the exercise with responsibility and respect for the law.
Call for Peaceful and Orderly Voting
Wike described the election as a crucial opportunity for residents to shape the future of the FCT. He called on eligible voters to turn out in large numbers.
He urged citizens to respect electoral rules and accept the outcome peacefully. He added that voters must demonstrate maturity and dignity throughout the process.
“Our prayer as an administration is that the elections will produce leaders who will promote development, peace and prosperity,” he said.
Electoral Act Amendment 2026
The minister also commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026. He said the law strengthens democratic institutions and promotes transparent elections.
He noted that the administration remains committed to credible polls and accountable leadership.
Positions Up for Grabs
Voters across the six area councils — Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali — will elect chairmen and councillors.
A total of 68 positions are contested. These include six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions.
Meanwhile, the campaign period, which began in September 2025, ends today.
Residents are expected to head to polling units on Saturday to choose their preferred candidates.
