The University of Abuja has expelled 28 students for involvement in cultism, examination malpractice, and drug possession, the institution announced on Sunday. The decision followed the 191st Regular Senate Meeting, which reviewed a report by the Student Disciplinary Committee. University authorities said the expelled students committed serious misconduct, threatening campus safety and academic integrity.
Senate Approves Student Expulsion and Other Disciplinary Actions
Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, emphasized that the university would not tolerate acts undermining academic integrity.
The Senate approved:
- Expulsion of 28 students for cult activities, exam fraud, drug possession, and threats to life.
- Withdrawal of certificates for 15 former students who ignored repeated disciplinary invitations.
- Warnings for 33 students involved in hostel racketeering, fighting, and conspiracy.
- Exoneration of nine students after investigations cleared them of any wrongdoing.
Serious Misconduct Reported
According to the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the expelled students were involved in:
- Assault and threats to life
- Conspiracy and burglary
- Theft
- Falsifying O-Level results uploaded for university admission
- Possession and use of hard drugs
University’s Commitment to Discipline and Safety
Prof. Fawehinmi stated, “The academic integrity of the university is sacrosanct, and violators will be sanctioned appropriately.”
He added, “Our aim is not only to enforce discipline but to guide students toward responsible citizenship and academic excellence.”
The university is strengthening student engagement programs, counseling, and orientation initiatives to prevent future infractions and maintain a safe learning environment.
Renewed Crackdown on Indiscipline
The expulsion reflects a broader effort to combat rising concerns about cultism, exam fraud, and criminal activities in Nigerian tertiary institutions. University authorities vowed to uphold standards without compromise while promoting responsible conduct among students.
