Again, Three Killed in Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Crash

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Three people died on Sunday morning when a speeding commercial vehicle crashed at the Ifo Railway Crossing on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State. The accident occurred around 4:20 a.m. and involved a white Volvo vehicle marked AYE 977 XA. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident and blamed excessive speeding.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps disclosed details through its spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi.

How the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Crash Happened

According to Odunsi, preliminary findings showed that the driver lost control due to speeding. The vehicle rammed into other road users at the railway crossing.

Seven people were involved in the crash. They included five men and two women. Sadly, three victims died on the spot.

However, one female passenger sustained severe multiple fractures. Meanwhile, three others escaped without injury.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene. Odunsi said FRSC officers maintained a 10-minute response time after receiving the distress call. They cleared the wreckage and restored traffic flow.

Victims Receive Medical Attention

Family members rushed the injured victim to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for specialised treatment. In addition, families of the deceased retrieved the bodies for burial arrangements.

Second Fatal Crash in One Week

Notably, this incident happened just six days after another fatal accident on the same expressway. An oil-laden truck had lost control near the Old Toll Gate section.

The truck rammed into two vehicles and bystanders. That earlier crash claimed six lives and left several others injured.

Government Orders Safety Measures

Following the repeated tragedies, the Ogun State Government ordered the removal of roadside traders and shanties along the expressway. Authorities believe the move will reduce risks and prevent future accidents.

Furthermore, the FRSC worked with the Nigeria Police Force and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps to clear obstructions along the route.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, warned motorists against speeding and reckless driving. He urged drivers to exercise caution, especially at night and near railway crossings.

“Motorists must obey speed limits to prevent further loss of lives,” the statement emphasised.

Authorities have again appealed to road users to prioritise safety and comply with traffic regulations on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
