Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal May Defect to APC Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, may soon defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. Sources said consultations between Lawal and APC leaders have continued in recent weeks in Abuja and other locations. The move could happen as early as next week, depending on the outcome of a pending court ruling on the PDP leadership crisis.

Lawal Holds Consultations With APC Leaders

Sources familiar with the talks said Lawal has met several top APC officials. These meetings focused on the possibility of his defection.

Insiders also said the consultations influenced the APC’s decision to delay its congresses in Zamfara State.

In a memo dated March 2, 2026, the party informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the postponement.

The APC explained that ongoing consultations required more time to complete administrative preparations.

According to the memo, the delay would ensure transparent and credible congresses in the state.

The party promised to submit a new timetable after completing internal discussions. It also confirmed that the process would follow the Electoral Act 2022 and party regulations.

Possible Boost for APC’s Political Strength

If Lawal joins the APC, the ruling party will control 31 state governors.

This development could further strengthen the party’s influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

Lawal currently belongs to the Tanimu Turaki-led faction within the PDP. The faction remains one of the groups battling for control of the party’s national structure.

PDP Stakeholders Discuss Future in Zamfara

Meanwhile, Lawal recently met key PDP stakeholders in Zamfara.

Sources said the meeting occurred about two weeks ago and focused on the party’s political future.

Many participants reportedly supported the idea of switching to the APC.

Observers believe the discussions reflect growing uncertainty within the PDP.

Wave of Defections Weakens PDP

Several governors have reportedly left the PDP within the past year.

They include Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Peter Mbah of Enugu.

Others are Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau.

In addition, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf joined the APC from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

These defections have increased pressure on the opposition party.

Bala Mohammed Also Exploring Options

Fresh indications suggest that Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed may also be weighing political options.

Mohammed currently serves as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Sources claimed he may have opened quiet negotiations with APC leaders.

The discussions reportedly involve possible concessions before any political move.

According to insiders, Mohammed may seek a Senate ticket and National Assembly seats for loyalists.

He may also want support from President Bola Tinubu to influence his successor in Bauchi State.

However, some APC members reportedly oppose this request. They cite concerns over alleged corruption issues linked to the governor.

Makinde Denies Plans to Leave PDP

Unlike others, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has rejected rumours about leaving the PDP.

Makinde also denied claims that he was negotiating to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He insisted that he remains committed to the PDP.

PDP Focuses on National Convention

Despite the crisis, the PDP leadership says it remains focused on internal processes.

Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, publicity secretary of the Mohammed Abdulrahman-led faction, confirmed preparations for upcoming congresses.

He said the party is preparing for its National Convention scheduled for March 28–29 in Abuja.

According to him, the convention will address internal disputes and reposition the party.

He added that the PDP will issue an official statement after the Court of Appeal delivers its judgment on the leadership dispute.

Court Ruling May Decide Lawal’s Next Move

Party insiders in Abuja, Gusau and Kaduna said Lawal and his allies are watching the court ruling closely.

The decision could determine whether the governor finally defects.

If he joins the APC, the move may further reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
