Man City draw Liverpool in blockbuster FA Cup quarter-final
Manchester City will face Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final after Monday’s draw revealed the tie, setting up a high-profile clash between the two rivals in England’s famous domestic cup competition. The game will take place in the quarter-final round as both clubs battle for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.
The meeting stands out as the biggest fixture of the round. Both teams have dominated English football in recent seasons.
City hold edge over Liverpool this season
So far, Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, have already defeated Liverpool twice this season.
First, City secured a convincing 3–0 win in Manchester in November. Later, they earned a 2–1 victory at Anfield in February.
Therefore, the quarter-final clash offers Liverpool a chance to respond and revive their FA Cup hopes.
First FA Cup meeting since 2022 semi-final
This tie marks the first FA Cup meeting between the clubs since the 2022 semi-final.
In that encounter, Liverpool won 3–2 and progressed to the final before lifting the trophy.
Historically, Liverpool have strong FA Cup success. The club has won the competition eight times, most recently four years ago.
City chasing another FA Cup title
Meanwhile, Manchester City have lifted the FA Cup seven times. They last won the trophy in 2023.
City reached the quarter-finals after defeating Newcastle United 3–1 in the fifth round.
Liverpool also advanced with a solid 3–1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the last 16.
Arsenal travel to Southampton in quarter-finals
Elsewhere, Arsenal progressed with a 2–1 win at Mansfield Town.
Manager Mikel Arteta will now take his side to Southampton in the quarter-finals.
Southampton produced one of the biggest surprises of the round. They defeated Fulham 1–0 in the fifth round.
Chelsea face giant-killers Port Vale
The draw also gave Chelsea a home match against Port Vale.
Port Vale stunned Sunderland with a 1–0 victory in the fifth round on Sunday.
Their win made them one of the tournament’s biggest giant-killers this season.
West Ham or Brentford to host Leeds
The final quarter-final tie will involve West Ham United or Brentford, who meet on Monday.
The winner of that match will host Leeds United in the last-eight clash.
Consequently, the FA Cup quarter-finals promise several exciting matches as teams chase a place at Wembley.
