Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday visited victims of the Maiduguri bomb blasts at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Borno State. He met injured survivors and bereaved families after multiple explosions on Monday killed over 20 people and injured more than 100. The visit aimed to offer support, assess the situation, and reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to ending terrorism in Nigeria.
VP Condemns Attack, Calls Perpetrators Barbaric
Shettima strongly condemned the deadly explosions in Maiduguri. He described the attackers as barbaric and unjustifiable. According to him, no cause permits the killing of innocent citizens.
Furthermore, he stressed that the government will not tolerate such violence. He assured residents that authorities will intensify efforts to prevent future attacks.
Government Promises Support for Victims
During the visit, the Vice President expressed sympathy for victims and their families. He also promised immediate and long-term support.
He stated that key agencies will provide assistance, including:
- National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
- North East Development Commission (NEDC)
- Borno State Government
Additionally, he confirmed that medical care and relief support will continue for those affected.
FG Boosts Security Efforts Nationwide
Shettima revealed that the Federal Government is increasing investment in security operations. He explained that authorities are providing more equipment and logistics to security forces.
Moreover, he referenced the President’s directive for security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri. He said the move will strengthen coordination and improve response efforts.
Officials Accompany VP on Visit
The Vice President visited alongside top government officials. These included:
- Borno State Deputy Governor, Usman Kadafur
- NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar
- Chief Medical Director, Professor Ahmed Ahijo
They all assessed the condition of victims and discussed ongoing interventions.
Renewed Commitment to Defeat Terrorism
Shettima reiterated the government’s determination to eliminate terrorism. He assured Nigerians that those behind the attacks will face decisive action.
He emphasized that security agencies remain focused and prepared. Therefore, he urged citizens to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities.
