Iran’s top officials, Ali Larijani, Gholamreza Soleimani, and Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday, and a funeral was held in Tehran on Wednesday, as government leaders and mourners gathered to honor them amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

Ali Larijani previously led Iran’s nuclear negotiations with the West and served as speaker of parliament.
He was also a senior cleric, earning the prestigious title Proof of Islam, reflecting decades of influence in political and religious circles.
Experts note his extensive experience in civilian intelligence made him a key figure in shaping Iran’s governance.
Soleimani and Khatib: Security Leaders Targeted
Gholamreza Soleimani headed the Basij paramilitary force, while Esmail Khatib, Iran’s intelligence minister, was closely aligned with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Israeli military sources said they had intelligence that enabled them to confirm the deaths of these officials within 24 hours.
International Reactions and Security Implications
Iranian officials condemned the attacks. President Masoud Pezeshkian called the assassinations “cowardly” and promised that their work will continue stronger than before.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized the military to target senior Iranian officials without case-by-case approval.
Expert Analysis on Impact
Analysts believe the deaths will create a significant disruption in Iran’s leadership structure.
Mohamed Vall, reporting from Tehran, described Khatib as highly influential both religiously and ideologically, with deep intelligence experience.
From Israel’s perspective, these strikes represent a major success in weakening Iran’s senior leadership.
Future of Iran-Israel Tensions
