City Clinch League Cup with 2-0 Win Over Arsenal at Wembley

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday to claim the League Cup, using Nico O’Reilly’s double to punish Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s costly errors. The win ended City’s trophy drought, marked Pep Guardiola’s record fifth League Cup triumph, and gave City momentum to close the Premier League gap on the leaders.

James Trafford Stars for City

James Trafford started in goal instead of Gianluigi Donnarumma and quickly repaid Guardiola’s faith with a sensational triple save. He blocked Kai Havertz’s close-range shot and twice denied Bukayo Saka from the rebound.

Arsenal pressed City effectively but lacked creativity after the early chance. Even their signature set-piece dominance was missing, prompting City fans to chant, “boring, boring Arsenal.”

City Dominate in Second Half

City transformed in the second half, applying relentless pressure on Arsenal. Kepa misjudged a long pass from Matheus Nunes, letting Cherki’s cross slip through his hands, and O’Reilly headed City into the lead.

Four minutes later, Nunes delivered a perfect cross to the far post. O’Reilly outpaced Saka to score another clinical header, securing a 2-0 victory.

Guardiola Celebrates Fifth League Cup Title

Pep Guardiola erupted in celebration, punching the air and sprinting down the touchline. The victory marked his 15th major trophy at City and highlighted his undimmed passion. Despite speculation about his future, Guardiola’s joy suggested full commitment to Manchester City.

Arsenal’s Tactical Gamble Backfires

Mikel Arteta’s decision to start Kepa over first-choice David Raya backfired spectacularly. Kepa’s history in the League Cup, including Chelsea’s 2019 final and 2022 shoot-out defeat, raised concerns that proved justified.

Arsenal’s conservative tactics and lack of creativity cost them the first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, ending their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple.

Arsenal Still Has Key Competitions Ahead

Despite the League Cup defeat, Arsenal remain in contention for the Premier League title, the FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton, and the Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon.
