The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for submitting political parties’ membership registers to May 10, 2026, in Nigeria. The commission announced the change on March 28, 2026, to address concerns raised by political parties. The decision affects preparations for the 2027 general elections and ensures compliance with electoral laws.
Why INEC Adjusted the Deadline
INEC reviewed the earlier schedule after political parties raised concerns during a meeting held on March 24, 2026. Initially, the commission fixed the submission window between April 1 and April 21, 2026.
However, the revised deadline now allows parties more time to prepare their membership registers. As a result, parties can better align with legal requirements and avoid disqualification.
New Guidelines for Party Primaries
INEC confirmed that political parties can now conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
The commission stressed that parties must submit their membership registers at least 21 days before their primaries. This rule follows Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026.
Therefore, parties must plan carefully to meet the deadline and avoid penalties.
