Ademola Adeleke has installed Oba Tajudeen Olanrewaju as the new Akire of Ikire in Ikire on Saturday. He urged the monarch to unite the people, promote peace, and drive development. The installation followed years of legal disputes and leadership crisis over the royal stool. The decision relied on a 2025 Court of Appeal settlement. The event marked a new chapter for the town after the death of the former monarch.
Governor Adeleke Emphasises Rule of Law
Governor Adeleke said his administration followed due process. He stressed respect for tradition and legal rulings.
“I have done the right thing for Ikire people,” he stated.
He explained that the government adopted the 2025 Court of Appeal settlement in Akure. The ruling confirmed the rightful succession process.
Background of the Ikire Chieftaincy Crisis
The Akire stool faced a long crisis that began in 2021. The dispute traced back to a 2014 Supreme Court judgment.
The court ruled that the Lambeloye Ruling House had no legal claim to the throne. Despite this, it produced the late Oba Olatunde Falabi.
As a result, tensions grew within the community.
Resolution Through Ruling Houses Agreement
However, the previous administration under Gboyega Oyetola worked with all five ruling houses. Together, they amended the 1958 Akire Chieftaincy Declaration.
This amendment allowed the Aketula Ruling House to produce the next monarch. The agreement helped restore order and fairness.
Court Decision Paved Way for New Monarch
The Court of Appeal in Akure affirmed the settlement in 2025. It clearly stated that Prince Olanrewaju from Aketula Ruling House should become Akire.
This condition applied once the stool became vacant and if he remained alive.
Following the death of Oba Falabi on February 27, 2026, the path became clear.
Adeleke Charges Monarch to Promote Unity
Governor Adeleke congratulated the new monarch and described him as a “son of destiny.”
He urged the king to lead with fairness and unity. He also advised him to see himself as a father to all residents.
“Unite your people and focus on development,” the governor added.
He further encouraged collaboration with the state government to boost growth.
New Akire Pledges Support for Development
Oba Olanrewaju appreciated the governor’s role in restoring peace. He promised to support unity and progress in Ikire.
He also assured residents that he would work for the town’s development.
Conclusion
The installation of the new Akire marks a turning point for Ikire. With legal disputes resolved, the town now looks ahead to peace and development.
