JAMB Urges Candidates to Report Unfair Admission Decisions

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ishaq Oloyede, on Tuesday in Nigeria, called on candidates and parents to report denied admissions despite valid UTME scores during an interview on Good Morning Nigeria. He explained that JAMB has strengthened verification processes to prevent fraud and ensure fairness.

JAMB Tightens Verification for Direct Entry Admissions

JAMB has expanded its verification system to cover degrees used for Direct Entry admissions. The board now works directly with awarding institutions, including foreign universities, to confirm authenticity.

According to Oloyede, some foreign institutions recently flagged fake degrees. He revealed that about four or five such cases surfaced this year.

Decline in Forgery Cases Since 2023

Oloyede noted a steady decline in fraudulent applications since 2023. He said stricter monitoring discourages candidates from attempting to cheat.

“Many candidates now avoid Direct Entry because they know we verify thoroughly,” he stated.

He added that JAMB detected and stopped 77 fraud cases this year. However, prevention efforts proved even more effective than arrests.

Closer Monitoring of A-Level Programmes

JAMB now closely monitors programmes like JUPEB and IJMB at the entry stage. This approach reduces opportunities for malpractice.

Previously, verification gaps existed because A-level checks were not part of JAMB’s core duties. However, the board has since partnered with university experts to improve its system.

Parents Still Encourage Illegal Shortcuts

Despite improvements, Oloyede expressed concern about parents promoting dishonest practices. He said many believe illegal routes remain the only option.

He shared that some parents contacted him for help securing admission. However, he refused to intervene.

“I tell them I will do nothing, and the candidate still gets admitted,” he explained.

CAPS Ensures Transparent Admission Process

Oloyede highlighted the role of the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) in ensuring fairness. Since its introduction in 2017, CAPS has streamlined admission processes.

He urged candidates who feel unfairly treated to report their cases.

“If you are sure of your score and deserve admission, protest to us,” he said.

He also confirmed that no issue has undermined CAPS credibility since its launch.
