The Nigeria Broadcasting Awards, organised by the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, honoured media professionals on Wednesday in Abuja at the NAF Conference Centre, Kado. The event recognised excellence in broadcasting, with Dr. John Momoh receiving a lifetime achievement award for his impact on the industry.
Lifetime Achievement and Major Wins
Dr. Momoh, Chairman of Channels Media Group, earned the top honour for his outstanding contributions to Nigerian broadcasting. In addition, Channels Television secured the Television Station of the Year award, reinforcing its industry leadership.
Other Notable Honourees
Several distinguished figures also received recognition. These included former NTA Director General Shyngle Wigwe, former NTA Managing Director Yemi Farounbi, and former Voice of Nigeria DG Abubakar Jijiwa.
Furthermore, the awards celebrated Hajia Sa’a Ibrahim, the first female BON chairman, and veteran broadcaster Bimbo Oloyede.
Posthumous Recognition
The organisers honoured late industry icons for their legacy. These included DAAR Communications founder Raymond Dokpesi, Timawus Mathias, Okokon Ndem, Anike Agbaje-Williams, and Patrick Ityohegh.
Government and Industry Support
The awards also recognised key supporters of the media industry. Among them were Information Minister Mohammed Idris, Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal, and Kaduna Governor Uba Sani.
Additionally, former BON Executive Secretary Obadiah Tohomdet and steering committee head Bayo Awosemo received honours for their contributions.
Remarks from Key Stakeholders
Governor Dauda Lawal emphasised the media’s influence on society. He stated that broadcasting shapes national and global development.
Meanwhile, Minister Mohammed Idris praised BON for sustaining the initiative. He noted that over 200 entries highlighted the sector’s vibrancy.
Commitment to Excellence
BON Chairman Abdulhamid Dembos described the ceremony as a celebration of excellence. Similarly, Executive Secretary Yemisi Gbamgbose stressed that the selection process remained rigorous and transparent.
According to Gbamgbose, the awards promote innovation, accuracy, and global competitiveness in broadcasting.
Judging Process and Industry Concerns
Chairman of the judges’ panel Danladi Bako revealed that 248 programme entries were reviewed. The panel selected three nominees per category before choosing winners.
However, he raised concerns about manpower shortages despite advancing technology.
