Kano Gets New Deputy Governor as Yusuf Nominates Murtala Garo

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has nominated Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor of Kano State after Abdulsalam Gwarzo resigned amid a political crisis, with the nomination submitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for approval in line with constitutional provisions to maintain governance stability.

Background to the Vacancy

The deputy governor’s seat became vacant after Abdulsalam Gwarzo stepped down following a prolonged political dispute. The rift began when he defected from the NNPP to the APC.

As tensions escalated, the Kano State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings. However, Gwarzo resigned before the process concluded.

In a surprising move, he later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), deepening the political realignment in the state.

Yusuf Nominates Garo

Following consultations with stakeholders, Governor Yusuf nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor.

According to a statement by Chief Press Secretary Mustapha Muhammad, the nomination has been forwarded to the State Assembly for approval.

The move aligns with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers governors to fill such vacancies.

Garo’s Political Experience

Garo brings over two decades of political experience. He has held several strategic positions in Kano State.

He previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party. He also worked as Special Adviser to the Governor.

In addition, he was elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He later became Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State.

Furthermore, he served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He was also the APC Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 elections.

Political and Family Ties

Garo is married to Walida Atiku Abubakar, daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

This connection places him within a prominent political network, especially within the ADC.

Government’s Position

The Kano State Government described Garo as a seasoned administrator. Officials believe his experience will strengthen governance and improve service delivery.

Moreover, the administration stated that the nomination forms part of broader efforts to stabilise leadership structures in the state.

What Happens Next

The Kano State House of Assembly will review the nomination. If approved, Garo will officially assume office as Deputy Governor.

This development is expected to reshape Kano’s political landscape in the coming months.
