Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections. He spoke in a piece titled “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof.” He addressed party leaders, aspirants, and supporters across Nigeria. He stressed unity, fairness, and discipline during the primaries. He warned against actions that could damage the party’s chances in the general election.
Only One Candidate Will Emerge
Shettima reminded aspirants that competition is inevitable in politics. However, he stressed that only one candidate will emerge.
“Many will consult. Many will spend. Many will hope. But only one name will be submitted,” he said.
He added that disappointment after primaries does not equal injustice. Instead, he described it as “the unavoidable arithmetic of democracy.”
Character Matters in Defeat
The Vice President emphasised the importance of political maturity. According to him, true character shows during difficult moments.
“The real test is how a politician behaves when the wind turns against him,” he said.
He urged aspirants to manage defeat with dignity. He noted that patience and resilience often lead to future opportunities.
Endorsements Are Normal, Not Weapons
Shettima addressed the controversy around endorsements within the APC. He clarified that endorsements are part of democratic politics.
“Preferences are not crimes,” he stated.
However, he warned against misuse. He said endorsements must not intimidate or exclude others.
“Influence must never become intimidation,” he added.
Call for Transparent Primaries
The Vice President urged party leaders to ensure fairness. He stressed that delegates must act without fear.
“Processes must be transparent enough to command respect,” he said.
He also called for quick resolution of disputes. According to him, unresolved grievances can harm party unity.
Don’t Destroy the Party After Losing
Shettima warned aspirants against leaving or sabotaging the party after losing.
“Politics is a long road. Do not burn your vehicle because of one rough turn,” he said.
He cited Nigeria’s political history as proof. Many leaders, he noted, lost early opportunities but later succeeded.
APC Must Manage Its Diversity
The Vice President described the APC as a large political family. He said its diversity is a strength, not a weakness.
However, he warned that poor management of differences could create division.
“Our party must not become a victim of its own strength,” he said.
Call for Unity Ahead of 2027
Shettima urged calmness and collective responsibility. He asked leaders to reduce tension and promote dialogue.
“Today’s opponent in a primary may be tomorrow’s ally,” he noted.
He also praised Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promoting coalition-building and political accommodation.
Final Appeal to Party Members
The Vice President concluded with a strong message on unity. He warned against internal conflict and external manipulation.
“If we pull down the roof in anger, nobody will be spared,” he said.
He also cautioned members against rumours and divisive narratives. He urged them to stay focused on strengthening the party before the 2027 elections.
