The United States government has resumed visa processing for foreign physicians, including Nigerians, after months of restrictions. The policy reversal, announced quietly last week by the Department of Homeland Security, affects medical professionals whose applications had stalled. The suspension, which began earlier this year, followed a broader visa ban on several countries, including Nigeria. Authorities say the decision aims to address growing healthcare workforce shortages across the US.
Policy Reversal Brings Relief to Foreign Physicians
The US government has now allowed physicians to continue visa applications and renewals. Previously, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services paused processing due to national security concerns.
However, the latest update confirms that medical professionals are no longer affected. The Department of Homeland Security stated that physician-related applications will proceed without interruption.
As a result, many Nigerian doctors can now resume their migration plans.
Medical Associations Raise Alarm Over Shortage
Earlier, several US medical groups expressed urgent concerns about the restrictions. On April 8, associations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Neurology, and American Academy of Pediatrics sent a joint letter to US authorities.
They warned that barriers were preventing qualified and vetted doctors from entering and staying in the country.
Moreover, they urged the government to grant national-interest exemptions and speed up visa processing for medical professionals.
Rising Demand for Doctors in the US
The shortage of physicians remains a critical issue. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the US faces a deficit of about 65,000 doctors.
Additionally, experts predict that the situation will worsen as the population ages and more doctors retire.
Therefore, foreign-trained physicians play a vital role in filling this gap.
Nigerian Doctors Play Key Role in US Healthcare
International medical graduates currently make up about 25.6 percent of active physicians in the US.
Furthermore, a 2024 global health workforce database ranks Nigerians as the sixth largest group of foreign doctors under the J-1 visa category.
This data highlights the importance of Nigerian professionals in supporting the US healthcare system.
