Former President Goodluck Jonathan said on Thursday in Abuja that he is consulting widely on whether to contest the 2027 presidential election after a youth coalition urged him to return to power. Jonathan spoke during a meeting with the Coalition for Jonathan 2027, where he stressed peace, credible elections, youth participation, and national unity as key factors for Nigeria’s democratic growth.
Jonathan Speaks on 2027 Presidential Election
Jonathan explained that running for president requires deep consultations and careful planning. He noted that the decision cannot be made hastily.
“I cannot just wake up and say I want to be the president of Nigeria again,” he said.
However, the former president left the door open for a possible return to active politics.
“I’ve heard you and I will consult widely,” Jonathan added.
Many political observers consider the statement his clearest indication yet of possible interest in the 2027 presidential race.
Peace and Credible Elections Remain Crucial
Jonathan stressed that Nigeria needs peaceful and credible elections to strengthen democracy. According to him, violence and flawed elections discourage competent citizens from participating in politics.
“The key thing we need in this country is peace,” he said.
He also urged Nigerians to continue promoting peaceful elections across the country.
Furthermore, Jonathan warned that democracy cannot thrive without public trust in the electoral process.
Jonathan Urges Youths to Participate in Politics
The former president challenged Nigerian youths to become active participants in elections instead of limiting themselves to political discussions online.
He urged young people to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and engage fully in democratic activities.
“If I ask how many of you have your voter’s card now, probably 50 per cent of you don’t have your voter’s card,” Jonathan stated.
He also lamented Nigeria’s low voter turnout despite its large voting population.
According to him, meaningful political change requires active voter participation.
Coalition for Jonathan 2027 Makes Fresh Appeal
Earlier, the Coalition for Jonathan 2027 appealed to the former president to contest the next presidential election.
The group, led by Dr. Tom Ohikere, recalled an earlier visit made to Jonathan on April 8, 2026.
The coalition claimed Nigeria needs experienced leadership to address current national challenges.
“Last month, April 8th 2026, The Coalition For Jonathan 2027 paid a friendly visit to your excellency,” the group stated.
Supporters at the gathering also urged Jonathan to respond positively to the growing calls for his return.
Growing Speculation Over Jonathan’s Political Future
Although Jonathan did not officially declare his intention to run, his comments have intensified political discussions ahead of the 2027 election.
Analysts believe further consultations with political stakeholders could determine his final decision.
For now, the former president maintains that peace, credible elections, and youth participation should remain Nigeria’s top democratic priorities.
