Senate Reverses Standing Orders Amendment, Reopens Leadership Race Ahead of 2027

By Elizabeth Ugbo

The Senate on Thursday reversed its controversial amendment to the Standing Orders in Abuja, allowing all elected senators to participate in leadership elections without first taking the Oath of Office and Allegiance. The decision followed a motion moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele after concerns emerged that the earlier amendment could create constitutional conflicts and political tension ahead of the 2027 Senate leadership contest.

Senate Withdraws Controversial Rule Amendment

The Senate adopted the reversal during plenary presided over by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau.

Earlier, lawmakers amended Sections 2(2) and 3(1) of the Standing Orders. The amendment stated that only senators-elect who had taken the constitutional oath could participate in Senate proceedings. It also restricted voting during the election of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President.

However, Bamidele later argued that the amendment might contradict constitutional provisions. He warned that it could also trigger unnecessary disputes within the chamber.

As a result, the Senate decided to restore the previous rule.

Oshiomhole Raises Objection During Plenary

The development created mild tension during plenary after Senator Adams Oshiomhole raised a point of order.

Oshiomhole sought clarification on comments he made during Wednesday’s session. Reports said his earlier remarks caused a disagreement with the Senate President.

The former Edo State governor insisted that senators must freely express their opinions on issues before the chamber.

However, Deputy Senate President Barau ruled him out of order. He explained that the Senate had already resolved the matter.

In addition, Senate Leader Bamidele cited the chamber’s rules. He stressed that senators could only revisit the issue through a substantive motion.

Reversal Reopens 2027 Senate Leadership Contest

With the reversal, all duly elected senators can now participate in the election of presiding officers immediately after inauguration.

Political observers believe the decision could reopen the race for key leadership positions in the 11th National Assembly. It may also create opportunities for fresh contenders ahead of the 2027 contest for Senate President.

The move has already sparked fresh debate within political circles about power dynamics in the upper legislative chamber.
