Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has celebrated Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti on his 100th birthday. Fayemi praised the elder statesman for his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, advocacy for true federalism, and contributions to Yoruba development. He made the remarks in a tribute released on May 10, 2026, while joining admirers across Nigeria to honour the Afenifere leader’s centenary celebration.
Fayemi Hails Fasoranti’s Democratic Struggle
Fayemi described Fasoranti as an extraordinary patriot who stood firmly for democracy during Nigeria’s military era. He said the Afenifere leader defended constitutionalism and citizens’ rights despite political repression.
According to him, Fasoranti and other pro-democracy advocates sustained the democratic spirit that later restored civilian rule in Nigeria.
Fayemi said, “Through the difficult years of military dictatorship, he remained resolute in defending democratic freedoms, constitutionalism, and the rights of the people.”
He added that Fasoranti’s courage inspired many Nigerians during some of the nation’s darkest political periods.
Commitment to Yoruba Unity and Federalism
Fayemi also praised Fasoranti’s commitment to Yoruba unity, education, fairness, and communal development. He noted that the elder statesman consistently promoted restructuring and true federalism as solutions for national stability.
Furthermore, he said Fasoranti preserved the ideals of equity and people-oriented governance through his leadership in Afenifere.
According to Fayemi, the nonagenarian never treated restructuring as a political slogan. Instead, he pursued it as a pathway to inclusive national development.
Fasoranti Described as a Symbol of Integrity
The former governor described Fasoranti as a moral compass whose values remained unchanged despite political pressure.
“At 100 years, Baba Fasoranti remains a towering symbol of integrity in public life,” Fayemi stated.
He added that the elder statesman’s life reflects sacrifice, discipline, consistency, and principled leadership.
Fayemi stressed that the centenary celebration represents more than longevity. He said it celebrates a century of purposeful living and national service.
Fayemi Reflects on Personal Relationship
Fayemi revealed that Fasoranti served as a mentor, counsellor, and father figure to him over the years.
He said the elder statesman consistently encouraged courage, moderation, discipline, and service to the people.
“In moments of political uncertainty, Baba remained one of those rare voices whose convictions never shifted with convenience,” Fayemi added.
Fasoranti’s Educational and Political Contributions
Fayemi highlighted Fasoranti’s contributions to education and leadership development. He noted that the Afenifere leader studied at the University of Ibadan before obtaining postgraduate qualifications in education administration.
He added that Fasoranti later earned advanced degrees from the University of Hull and Maguire University in Australia.
According to Fayemi, Fasoranti’s educational background shaped his lifelong commitment to human development and moral leadership.
He also described the elder statesman as a loyal disciple of late Obafemi Awolowo. He recalled Fasoranti’s involvement in the Action Group during the First Republic and the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
Fayemi further noted that Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance under late Adekunle Ajasin in the old Ondo State government.
Fayemi Prays for Fasoranti at 100
Fayemi, alongside his wife Bisi and family members, congratulated Fasoranti on reaching 100 years.
He prayed for continued peace, strength, and joy for the elder statesman while celebrating his enduring impact on Nigeria’s democracy and Yoruba leadership.
