Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that some individuals allegedly tried to create tension between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after their administration began in 2023. Shettima made the disclosure on Monday during the public presentation of My Life of Duty and Allegiance, the autobiography of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon. He said the unnamed individuals accused him of plotting to kill Tinubu and take over power, but the president dismissed the allegation after questioning its logic.
Shettima Speaks On Alleged Political Plot
Shettima explained that the allegation surfaced barely three months after the administration assumed office. According to him, the claim emerged when trust among key political actors was still developing.
The Vice President said some people from Borno State approached Tinubu with the allegation. However, he refused to mention their names during the event.
Shettima disclosed that Tinubu later called him and jokingly warned him to stop wearing “Shettima’s clothes.” He explained that the president treated the matter lightly after noticing inconsistencies in the accusation.
Tinubu Dismissed The Allegation
According to Shettima, Tinubu rejected the allegation because it did not match the political reality before the 2023 election.
He noted that both of them contested for the presidency before eventually emerging as running mates. Therefore, Tinubu reportedly reasoned that such a political alliance would never have happened if the alleged plot existed.
Shettima added that the same individuals allegedly revived the claim after the election. Nevertheless, Tinubu still ignored the accusations.
The Vice President also revealed that Tinubu continued wearing garments gifted to him earlier. He said the president refused to attach superstitious meaning to the allegation.
Shettima Urges Nigerians To Embrace Unity
During the event, Shettima urged Nigerians to promote unity and mutual trust. He warned against divisive politics, saying such actions weaken national cohesion and national development.
He stressed the need for political actors to focus on cooperation rather than suspicion and conflict.
