The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will kick off the 2026/27 season between August 27 and 29, 2026, following a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja involving the National Sports Commission (NSC), Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), NPFL, and club owners. The meeting approved the new football calendar and confirmed that the league winners will receive N1 billion in prize money. The decision aims to strengthen the league’s commercial appeal, improve competitiveness, and attract more investment into Nigerian football.
NPFL Confirms August Kickoff Date
The NPFL and its stakeholders agreed on the tentative kickoff date during a joint meeting in Abuja.
The approved football calendar will run until May 28, 2027. It also accommodates fixtures for the President Federation Cup, ensuring a more organised domestic football schedule.
League organisers believe the structured calendar will help clubs prepare better while reducing fixture congestion.
League Winners to Earn Historic N1 Billion Prize
The 2026/27 season will introduce the biggest prize money in Nigerian club football history.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, announced that the league champions will receive N1 billion.
The enhanced reward forms part of broader reforms designed to improve the commercial value of the NPFL. In addition, the initiative seeks to attract more private investment and raise the standard of domestic football.
Officials believe the increased financial incentive will encourage stronger competition among clubs throughout the season.
Four Clubs Gain Promotion to the NPFL
The new campaign will feature four clubs promoted from the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United secured promotion after successful 2025/26 NNL campaigns.
The promoted sides replace the four clubs relegated from the just-concluded NPFL season.
Their arrival is expected to increase competition and bring fresh excitement to the top-flight league.
Enugu Rangers Begin Title Defence
Defending champions Enugu Rangers will start the season aiming to retain their league crown.
The Flying Antelopes claimed their ninth NPFL title after finishing top of the table in the 2025/26 season.
They will face renewed challenges from established contenders and the newly promoted clubs as the race for the championship begins.
NPFL Eyes Stronger Commercial Growth
League administrators expect the new calendar and record prize money to boost the NPFL’s profile.
Furthermore, they hope the reforms will attract sponsors, increase fan engagement, and improve the overall quality of Nigerian club football.
With a fixed schedule and greater financial incentives, the 2026/27 season promises to mark a significant step in the league’s development.
