Atiku Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesperson After ADC VP Dispute

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson. The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo criticised the party’s choice of vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo announced the appointment in a statement published on his official X page on Thursday. He also thanked Atiku for the confidence reposed in him.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.

Okonkwo Commends Atiku’s Leadership

Okonkwo described the appointment as proof of Atiku’s leadership style. According to him, the former vice president prefers dialogue instead of taking offence when associates express concerns.

“Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations over any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems,” he stated.

South-East Interests Discussed

Okonkwo revealed that he met with Atiku and other ADC leaders to discuss the interests of the South-East. He said the discussions addressed concerns despite challenges created by the Electoral Act, 2026.

“At a dialogue with HE AA and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East have been discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground,” he said.

Appreciation to Party Leaders and Supporters

Okonkwo also expressed appreciation to several party leaders for strengthening the ADC ahead of the 2027 election.

He specifically thanked Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their contributions.

Furthermore, he acknowledged the support of his family, friends and supporters.

“My sincere gratitude to my family, fans, and friends for their support and prayers, which God answered in covering my errors and colouring my efforts to pave way for this appointment. I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out this challenging post, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria.”

Appointment Follows VP Selection Controversy

The appointment follows Okonkwo’s criticism of the ADC’s vice-presidential selection process.

Earlier, he warned that choosing a running mate from the South-South could deepen the South-East’s political marginalisation. He argued that the region has not produced either the president or vice president since 1999.

Despite the concerns, the ADC later selected former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate after Atiku secured the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

The development positions Okonkwo as a key member of Atiku’s campaign team as the opposition prepares for the 2027 presidential race.
