Senator Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on August 3, 2026, in Kano State, citing personal commitments and career aspirations after careful reflection. He announced the decision in a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area, bringing his membership in the party to an immediate end.
Hanga Announces Immediate Resignation
Hanga confirmed that his resignation took effect on August 3, 2026. However, he did not reveal his next political move or state whether he would join another political party.
His departure leaves the NDC without Senate representation from northern Nigeria.
In the resignation letter, Hanga wrote:
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026.
“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”
Senator Appreciates Party Members
The lawmaker thanked the ward executive committee and party members for their support throughout his time in the NDC.
He said he valued the relationships and experiences gained during his political journey with the party.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party.
“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences gained during our political activities together.”
Requests Removal from Party Register
Furthermore, Hanga asked the ward leadership to officially remove his name from the party’s membership register.
His resignation also ends his role as the NDC’s only senator from northern Nigeria. Before leaving the party, he served as the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate.
Although speculation may follow, Hanga has remained silent about his future political plans.
