Donald Trump secretly switched from Air Force One to another US aircraft in Turkey on July 8 after security officials warned of a possible Iranian missile threat. The US president made the switch during his NATO summit trip, while journalists and senior aides remained aboard the presidential plane. The move aimed to protect Trump from a potential attack as tensions between the United States and Iran escalated.
Trump Confirms Secret Plane Switch
Trump confirmed Tuesday that officials asked him to leave Air Force One before it departed Turkey.
“They wanted me to go in a different flight, a different plane,” Trump told reporters.
He said the alternative aircraft offered an equal level of safety.
However, officials considered the change necessary because of the potential threat.
“I do what they say,” Trump added.
The Washington Post first reported details of the operation.
According to the report, Trump left Air Force One using a catering truck.
He then boarded a smaller US Air Force aircraft waiting nearby.
Iran Threat Prompted Security Measures
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Israel warned the United States about a possible attack.
The warning reportedly involved a shoulder-fired missile targeting Air Force One.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials remained on the presidential aircraft.
Meanwhile, Secret Service agents ordered journalists to lower their window shades during takeoff.
That instruction raised concerns among reporters traveling with the president.
Such measures remain unusual outside active combat zones.
Journalists Unaware of Trump’s Departure
Around a dozen journalists traveled separately inside Air Force One.
They reportedly had no access to Trump during the flight.
Consequently, they did not know the president had already left the aircraft.
The journalists eventually departed Turkey aboard Air Force One.
Some reporters later expressed anger over the operation.
They said officials used them as unwitting decoys without providing adequate information.
Others questioned why the White House did not explain the security situation earlier.
Trump Says Air Force One Faced Greater Risk
Trump dismissed some concerns about the decision.
He said the presidential aircraft probably faced a greater threat.
“I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk,” Trump told reporters.
He suggested attackers would likely target the aircraft carrying the president.
Trump also said he did not spend much time asking about the reported threat.
“I guess there was a threat out there,” he said.
The president added that he did not worry about such dangers.
Secret Service Used Unusual Exit Strategy
Trump initially boarded Air Force One in full view of journalists and photographers.
AFP photographs showed supply containers positioned near the front and rear of the aircraft.
However, Trump reportedly entered one of the containers.
The operation allowed him to leave the presidential plane without attracting attention.
He then transferred to the smaller military aircraft nearby.
The unusual strategy helped security officials conceal his movement from potential attackers.
Trump Had Previously Faced Aircraft Security Questions
Trump’s NATO trip had already attracted attention before the secret switch.
He arrived aboard a luxury Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar.
The aircraft had undergone modifications for potential presidential use.
However, reports questioned whether it had the same anti-missile protection as Air Force One.
The older Air Force One aircraft therefore returned to service for the journey.
Trump later returned to the Qatar-linked aircraft during a stop in Britain.
He also joked about the security situation when journalists lowered their window blinds.
Clinton Used a Decoy Aircraft in 2000
Trump’s secret transfer has historical precedent.
In 2000, former President Bill Clinton reportedly switched presidential aircraft during a trip.
The change happened while he traveled from India toward Pakistan.
A decoy aircraft carried Secret Service agents as part of the security operation.
The move demonstrated how presidential travel can involve elaborate deception.
Biden’s Ukraine Trip Also Relied on Secrecy
Former President Joe Biden also used strict secrecy during his 2023 visit to Ukraine.
His journey involved a long flight and train trip.
A reporter and photographer accompanied Biden during the operation.
However, officials kept details of the trip confidential until his arrival.
Presidential travel often requires secrecy because of the security risks involved.
Schumer Demands Congressional Briefing
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called for Congress to receive a briefing.
He cited the reported Iranian threats against Trump.
Schumer also questioned the extraordinary measures used to move the president.
Trump, however, played down concerns about the threats.
“Any consequential president has a lot of threats,” he said.
