Nigeria showcased its progress in digital infrastructure and sustainable development at high-level events during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.
Nigeria Highlights Digital Infrastructure Expansion
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, highlighted Nigeria’s efforts to expand broadband access.
He noted that the government is targeting underserved communities across the country.
According to him, the BRIDGE project could provide digital access to more than 20 million Nigerians.
The initiative aims to expand connectivity and create greater opportunities through digital technology.
Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the importance of responsible data governance alongside digital expansion.
Data Protection Remains a Priority
The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, stressed the need for strong data safeguards.
He said digital public infrastructure must comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Olatunji also highlighted the importance of protecting national social registers and citizens’ personal information.
According to him, secure and transparent data processing will help preserve public trust.
Nigeria Engages Global Stakeholders
The UNGA platform also enabled Nigeria to exchange policy and regulatory experiences with global stakeholders.
Discussions focused on responsible data use and effective digital governance.
Delegates noted that digital infrastructure requires strong privacy protections to deliver lasting socio-economic benefits.
They also linked responsible data governance with progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Ecosystem
The engagements seek to strengthen Nigeria’s institutional capacity and digital governance systems.
They also aim to improve social safety nets for vulnerable citizens.
In addition, the collaboration could support a trusted data ecosystem in Nigeria.
Ultimately, Nigeria’s participation at UNGA 81 highlighted the link between digital infrastructure, data protection and sustainable development.
