The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu State. The agency arrested two alleged kingpins, recovered large quantities of precursor chemicals, and uncovered the laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area. NDLEA operatives conducted months of intelligence and surveillance before busting the clandestine facility.
NDLEA Arrests Two Alleged Drug Cartel Kingpins
The two suspects are 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George.
Investigators linked both men to the methamphetamine laboratory operation. They allegedly worked with Rodriguez Villanueva, a Mexican drug cartel member based in Mexico City.
NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit tracked the syndicate for several months. Surveillance between December 1 and 4, 2025, traced Brown across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states.
The operation eventually led officers to a compound in Obeagu. There, they discovered a clandestine laboratory capable of producing methamphetamine commercially.
Methamphetamine Laboratory Equipped for Large-Scale Production
The facility contained improvised reactors and distillation equipment. NDLEA said the setup resembled laboratories recently dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.
A search of the facility uncovered large quantities of chemicals used in methamphetamine production.
The recovered substances included:
- 690 litres of methylamine
- 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol
- 300 litres of hydrochloric acid
- 290 litres of toluene
- 290 litres of acetone
- 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide
- 125 kilograms of N-phenylacetamide
- 414 kilograms of lead acetate
- 769.6 kilograms of tartaric acid
NDLEA said the haul matched a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
More Equipment and Ephedrine Recovered
Operatives also searched George’s family residence during the investigation.
The search produced eight large fuel tanks and four commercial gas burners. Officers also recovered four dehydrators and 11 kilograms of ephedrine.
According to the agency, the findings further showed the scale of the alleged cartel operation.
Suspects Face Five-Count Charge
NDLEA arraigned Christopher and Monday before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello. The case came before the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division.
The five-count charge involves alleged conspiracy and the organisation, management and financing of a drug trafficking organisation.
It also covers the unlawful possession of precursor chemicals for methamphetamine production. The charges contravene provisions of the NDLEA Act.
Both suspects entered their pleas before the court. Following an NDLEA request for an accelerated hearing, Justice Segun-Bello fixed October 21, 2026, for trial.
Three Other Suspects Remain at Large
Three other individuals also feature in the charges but remain at large.
They include Uchenna, also known as Uche, and Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu. The third suspect is Rodriguez Villanueva, whom NDLEA identified as a Mexican drug cartel member.
The agency said it remains committed to tracking down all fleeing suspects linked to the operation.
Marwa Reaffirms NDLEA’s Commitment
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the officers involved in the operation.
Marwa commended their professionalism and determination in dismantling the alleged international drug syndicate.
He also reaffirmed NDLEA’s commitment to apprehending every suspect connected to the cartel.
According to him, the Enugu laboratory bust demonstrates Nigeria’s determination to prevent transnational drug cartels from gaining ground.
He further said intelligence-led operations and international partnerships would continue to target loopholes exploited by drug traffickers.
Marwa also urged NDLEA personnel to maintain the momentum against illicit drug production and trafficking across the country.
