Nigeria is set to lead regional blue economy policy development as Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, advances efforts to strengthen cooperation, coordinate stakeholders, and promote sustainable marine resource management. The initiative aims to establish a common strategic framework for countries sharing marine resources.
Oyetola Welcomes Regional Leadership Role
Oyetola expressed appreciation to the Commission for entrusting Nigeria with the responsibility. He described the assignment as an opportunity to deepen regional cooperation and encourage the sustainable use of shared marine resources.
Furthermore, the minister emphasised the importance of collaboration among regional stakeholders. Such cooperation could help participating countries develop effective policies for managing marine resources and supporting the blue economy.
Minister Proposes Steering Committee
To ensure effective coordination and broad participation, Oyetola proposed establishing a Steering Committee. The committee would guide policy development and coordinate engagement with relevant stakeholders.
In addition, the proposed body would help bring together key institutions and other stakeholders. Their contributions would support the development of a policy framework that reflects shared regional priorities.
Proposed Policy to Guide Regional Cooperation
The proposed regional blue economy policy seeks to provide a common strategic direction for participating countries. It is expected to strengthen coordination and encourage sustainable approaches to managing shared marine resources.
Moreover, a coordinated policy framework could help countries maximise the economic potential of marine resources. It could also promote cooperation in areas related to marine development and environmental sustainability.
Nigeria’s leadership role presents an opportunity to support regional collaboration and advance a sustainable blue economy agenda.
