Atiku Abubakar hires U.S. lobbying firm ahead of 2027 election

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has hired Washington-based Von Batten-Montague-York L.C. in March 2026 to strengthen his image, influence U.S. policymakers, and counter narratives linked to the Nigerian government ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Why Atiku hired a U.S. lobbying firm

Atiku aims to boost his international standing as political activities intensify before 2027.
The firm will engage U.S. officials and shape perceptions about his leadership and policies.

Furthermore, the agreement seeks to counter Nigeria’s official lobbying efforts in the United States.
It also aims to promote his vision among American stakeholders.

Scope of the lobbying agreement

The contract covers direct engagement with U.S. policymakers.
These include members of Congress and executive branch officials.

In addition, the firm will provide strategic communication and policy advisory services.
It will also manage Atiku’s public image through targeted messaging.

According to filings, the firm will handle:

  • Government relations and lobbying
  • Policy positioning and advisory
  • Strategic communication
  • Reputation management

$1.2 million deal details

The agreement is valued at $1.2 million for 12 months.
Payments will be made in six instalments.

Documents filed with the U.S. Department of Justice confirm the deal.
The contract was signed on March 9 and 10, 2026.

Karl Von Batten signed for the firm.
Fabiyi Oladimeji signed on behalf of Atiku.

ADC crisis and INEC decision raise concerns

The move comes amid uncertainty within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The party faces internal challenges linked to leadership disputes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently derecognised factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala.

As a result, the decision has complicated the party’s structure and readiness.
Observers say it could affect opposition coordination ahead of 2027.

Concerns over Nigeria’s opposition space

The lobbying firm argued that INEC’s decision has disrupted the opposition.
It warned that the move could limit political organisation at a critical time.

Moreover, the firm called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure credible and transparent elections.

Growing role of international lobbying

Atiku’s strategy highlights a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
International lobbying and perception management now shape electoral contests.

The firm also plans to engage U.S. authorities, including Donald Trump and Congress members.

This approach aims to build influence and strengthen political positioning globally.
