Six Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils have been indicted by an audit report for committing financial infractions amounting to over ₦100 billion, following an audit conducted by the Office of the Auditor-General for the FCT Area Councils, which was submitted to the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee in Abuja, over alleged unremitted taxes, pension deductions, poor asset documentation and unaccounted public expenditure.
The report indicted Abaji, Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali Area Councils, citing widespread financial mismanagement across the councils.
According to the auditors, the councils recorded outstanding liabilities totalling ₦7.6 billion as of December 2021, with the Abuja Municipal Area Council accounting for the highest share of the debt.
The audit further raised concerns over ₦24.8 billion expended in 2021, noting that a substantial portion of funds allocated for capital projects could not be properly accounted for.
Reacting to the findings, Chairman of the House Public Accounts Committee, Hon. Bamidele Salam, confirmed that the chairmen of the affected councils and their finance directors have been summoned to appear before the committee.
He warned that failure to honour the summons by Wednesday, February 11, 2026, would compel the House to invoke its constitutional powers to enforce compliance.
