Bandits attacked the Kaduna State community of Ariko in Kachia Local Government Area early Sunday during Easter, killing seven worshippers and abducting several others at two churches.
Attack on Churches During Easter
The assault occurred in the early hours of Sunday. Gunmen targeted First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ariko.
Witnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers. They surrounded the area and opened fire on worshippers. As a result, panic spread quickly across the community.
Casualties and Abductions
Mark Bawa, councillor representing Awon Ward, confirmed the incident. He said seven people died in the attack. He also stated that the gunmen abducted several residents and fled into nearby bushes.
Residents reported that the attackers operated for a long period. However, no immediate resistance or intervention occurred.
Poor Network Delayed Response
Bawa blamed poor telecommunications in the area. According to him, weak network coverage delayed distress calls. Consequently, security forces could not respond quickly.
Rising Insecurity in Southern Kaduna
This attack follows a similar incident in Kurmin Wali community in February 2026. During that event, gunmen abducted several worshippers at a church gathering.
Since then, residents have demanded stronger security presence. Moreover, they continue to express fear over repeated attacks during religious events.
Police Reaction
Kaduna State Police spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, acknowledged the incident. He said the command would release more details soon.
Growing Concerns
Observers warn that rural communities remain vulnerable. In particular, festive periods and religious gatherings attract repeated attacks. Therefore, many residents now call for urgent and sustained security intervention.
