Residents of Kankia Local Government Area in Katsina State are facing panic after suspected bandits issued a six-day ultimatum demanding 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep to avoid attack. The threat was delivered through a letter on April 6, targeting several communities, with a compliance deadline of April 10. The incident has raised serious security concerns, as authorities investigate the situation while residents flee for safety.
Ultimatum Sparks Panic Across Communities
The threat has triggered fear in affected communities, including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa, and Tudun Wulli. Reports indicate that armed bandits are moving freely on motorcycles across these areas.
As a result, many residents have abandoned their homes. Several families have relocated to Rimaye, parts of Kano State, and Katsina town. According to locals, about 10 villages now stand deserted.
Residents Describe Months of Harassment
A resident, who spoke anonymously, revealed that the ultimatum followed months of harassment and abductions. He explained that a notorious bandit leader had earlier moved rustled animals after a dispute with associates.
Subsequently, the bandit leader imposed what residents described as a “tax” on communities. This demand, according to the source, worsened the already tense security situation.
“The situation has forced people to flee,” the resident said. “Many fear returning home due to possible attacks.”
Government Urges Calm Amid Investigation
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Government has appealed for calm. The Director General of Media and Publicity, Malam Maiwada Dan-Mallam, stated that authorities are investigating the threat.
He also cautioned that the letter might have been designed to create panic among residents. Furthermore, he assured the public that the government continues to work tirelessly to protect lives and property.
Doubts Over Past Negotiations
However, residents have raised concerns about previous negotiations with bandits. They noted that such efforts only brought temporary relief in the past.
Therefore, many now question the effectiveness of dialogue as a long-term solution to the crisis.
Tension Remains High Despite Assurances
Despite government reassurances, tension remains high across the affected communities. Displaced residents continue to live in fear, uncertain about when it will be safe to return home.
Security experts warn that urgent and decisive action is necessary to restore confidence and ensure lasting peace in the region.
