Arsenal Edge Mansfield to Reach FA Cup Quarter-Finals
Eberechi Eze scored the decisive goal as Arsenal F.C. defeated Mansfield Town F.C. 2–1 on Sunday to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The match took place at Mansfield’s home ground, where Arsenal survived a strong challenge from the League One side. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta rotated his squad heavily, trusting two 16-year-old starters while resting key players ahead of crucial fixtures.
Arteta Trusts Teenage Talent
Arteta handed rare starts to teenagers Max Dowman and Marli Salmon. The decision made history for Arsenal.
The club became the first Premier League team to start two players aged 16 or under in a competitive match.
Max Dowman impressed throughout the first half. The youngster showed confidence and creativity in attacking areas.
Dowman also tested Mansfield’s goalkeeper twice before the opening goal arrived. His performance highlighted why he has trained with the first team since age 14.
Meanwhile, Marli Salmon played from defence but regularly carried the ball into midfield. The tactical role reflected the coaches’ high expectations.
Mansfield Push Arsenal to the Limit
However, the hosts refused to sit back. Mansfield produced a lively display and created several chances early.
Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made sharp saves from Rhys Oates and Louis Reed.
Additionally, Tyler Roberts curled a dangerous effort just wide.
In fact, Mansfield recorded 11 first-half shots. That figure marked Arsenal’s highest first-half concession since April 2022.
Madueke Breaks the Deadlock
Despite the pressure, Arsenal struck just before halftime.
Noni Madueke forced a save from goalkeeper Liam Roberts moments earlier.
Soon after, Gabriel Martinelli set him up near the edge of the box. Madueke then curled a superb shot into the top corner.
Mansfield Equalise After Salmon Error
Nevertheless, Mansfield responded after the break.
Salmon attempted a pass to Cristhian Mosquera but under-hit the ball.
Substitute Will Evans intercepted and calmly finished past Arrizabalaga.
The equaliser lifted the home crowd and increased pressure on the Premier League leaders.
Eze Seals Arsenal Victory
Arteta quickly reacted by introducing experienced players from the bench.
Eventually, the change paid off.
Eze unleashed a powerful strike in the 66th minute. The ball flew high into the net and restored Arsenal’s lead.
As a result, Arsenal avoided a cup upset and secured a place in the last eight.
Key Players Rested Ahead of Crucial Fixtures
Arteta also rested several key players.
Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhães and Martin Zubimendi remained unused.
The manager prioritised upcoming matches in the league and Europe.
Arsenal Chase Historic Quadruple
The victory keeps Arsenal’s trophy ambitions alive this season.
The Gunners remain in contention for four major titles.
Next, they travel to Germany to face Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.
