The Edo State Police Command summoned the management of Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Several male students brutally attacked a fellow student while another recorded the incident. The Edo State Government promised sanctions for anyone found guilty, and investigations are ongoing.
Parents Issue Formal Apology
The family of the student involved, represented by Tim Asoro, expressed deep shock and embarrassment. In a statement, they acknowledged their son’s wrongdoing and its impact on the victim, the school, and the community.
“He understands that what happened has consequences not only for himself but also for another child, the school, and our entire family,” the statement read.
The parents confirmed that their son will receive guidance and counseling to help him become more responsible and compassionate. They also apologized directly to the victim and his family.
School Takes Swift Disciplinary Action
The Igbinedion Education Centre expelled all students involved in the attack. The school aims to set a strong example that bullying will not be tolerated.
The Ministry of Education has set up a five-member investigative committee to determine the full circumstances and identify everyone involved. Meanwhile, police investigations continue, with possible prosecution for those culpable.
A Pattern of School Bullying in Nigeria
This incident is not the first Nigerian secondary school bullying case to attract national attention. In 2024, a video from Lead British International School in Gwarinpa, Abuja, showed Namtira Bwala being brutally slapped by classmates. That case also sparked nationwide outrage.
Experts note that bullying at schools causes emotional distress and can have long-term psychological effects. Authorities emphasize that strict enforcement of rules and parental involvement are essential to prevent such incidents.
Family Hopes for Healing and Lessons Learned
The Asoro family expressed relief that medical reports confirmed the victim was physically unharmed. However, they acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident.
“Watching the video has been one of the most distressing and heartbreaking experiences of our lives,” the parents said.
They concluded by hoping that all affected parties can heal while their son learns to become a better person.
