The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed flight disruptions on Sunday after the United States and Israel carried out military strikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory actions and airspace closures across the Middle East. The crisis has affected Nigerian travellers flying to destinations such as Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in Abuja. Authorities urged calm and advised Nigerians abroad to remain vigilant.
FG Prioritises Safety of Nigerians Abroad
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the safety of Nigerians abroad remains its top priority.
In a statement signed by spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the ministry said it is closely monitoring developments. The government called on all parties to de-escalate tensions to protect global peace.
Officials confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are on high alert. These missions continue to provide consular assistance where necessary.
Furthermore, the ministry advised Nigerians in affected areas to:
- Remain vigilant at all times
- Avoid military or strategic locations
- Limit non-essential movement
- Follow directives from local authorities
FAAN Confirms Flight Disruptions
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced that airspace closures in parts of the Middle East now affect flights to and from Nigeria.
FAAN stated that airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways have cancelled or delayed scheduled services.
Passengers should contact their airlines directly for updated flight information and rebooking options.
FAAN said it continues to work with aviation authorities and airline operators. The agency promised to provide updates when necessary.
International Airlines Suspend Operations
Several global carriers also suspended flights across the region. These include:
- Air France
- Lufthansa
- Turkish Airlines
- Air India
The disruptions followed military strikes that reportedly caused explosions in Tehran.
In response, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates announced partial or full airspace closures.
Growing Regional Tensions
The escalation has increased security concerns across the Middle East. As a result, aviation authorities continue to assess risks.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has urged citizens to remain calm and informed. Officials reiterated their commitment to protecting Nigerians wherever they reside.
Travellers should monitor official updates and maintain close contact with airlines during this period of uncertainty.
