The Federal Government has released ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to address infrastructure deficits and improve teaching and learning facilities. The Federal Ministry of Finance announced the disbursement on Sunday under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund. The intervention covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education. It also aims to support agreements between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

FG Allocates ₦38.93bn to Public Institutions

The Federal Ministry of Finance disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Head of Media, Efe Ovuakporie.

According to the ministry, the funding will help beneficiary institutions implement approved projects and address critical infrastructure challenges.

The statement said the intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to meet the needs of public universities. It will also support the implementation of agreements reached with ASUU under their Memorandum of Understanding.

Furthermore, the ministry expects the funding to improve institutional capacity and strengthen the quality of tertiary education nationwide.

Universities Receive ₦28.5bn Allocation

Universities will receive the largest share of the ₦38.93 billion intervention, according to the allocation breakdown.

The funding distribution covers three categories of public tertiary institutions:

  • Universities: ₦28.5 billion for 79 institutions.
  • Polytechnics: ₦5.8 billion for 46 institutions.
  • Colleges of Education: ₦4.7 billion for 41 institutions.

Universities account for approximately 73.2 per cent of the total allocation. Polytechnics receive about 14.9 per cent, while colleges of education account for roughly 12.1 per cent.

Together, the allocations cover 166 public tertiary institutions across the country.

Fund Targets Infrastructure Deficits

The Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund aims to address persistent infrastructure challenges in public tertiary institutions.

Many institutions face concerns over inadequate facilities, which have featured in negotiations between the government and academic unions.

Consequently, the latest disbursement will allow beneficiary institutions to begin new projects or continue previously approved interventions.

The ministry expects the projects to improve teaching facilities, learning conditions and overall institutional operations.

FG Calls for Effective Monitoring and Coordination

The Federal Government has stressed the importance of cooperation among relevant ministries and beneficiary institutions.

The Federal Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Education and participating institutions must coordinate their efforts to ensure effective use of the funds.

Moreover, the ministry expects the intervention to deliver measurable improvements in infrastructure and institutional capacity.

Effective implementation will remain crucial to achieving the fund’s objectives and improving the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria.

The government hopes the investment will strengthen public institutions and provide better learning environments for students and academic staff.
