Abuja, Nigeria – February 17, 2026: Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday night. He was questioned earlier in the day in connection with alleged ₦432 billion financial misconduct during his tenure.

EFCC Interrogates El-Rufai Over Misappropriation Allegations

El-Rufai, a senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arrived at the EFCC Jabi headquarters around 10 a.m. He faced hours of questioning regarding allegations outlined in a 2024 Kaduna State House of Assembly report.

The report accuses his administration of misappropriating state loans, awarding contracts without due process, and leaving Kaduna State heavily indebted.

Investigation Details and Timeline

A senior EFCC official explained that El-Rufai had been under investigation for nearly a year. The commission typically invites suspects only after gathering substantial evidence.

“We are investigating him based on the allegations from the Kaduna State Assembly report,” the official said.

Custody Status and Next Steps

EFCC sources confirmed El-Rufai would not be released on Monday. His continued detention aims to ensure thorough interrogation and review of evidence.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed El-Rufai honored the invitation but did not disclose details about the questioning or future actions.

Additional Allegations: Phone Bugging Claims

Apart from financial misconduct, El-Rufai reportedly faces prosecution for allegedly bugging the phone of former National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. Sources close to the investigation stated these claims are under review.

Implications for Kaduna Politics

El-Rufai’s detention marks a significant development in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. Analysts suggest the case could influence political dynamics ahead of future elections.
