The Benue State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the abduction of nine worshippers in Ojije, Utonkon, Ado LGA.
The victims were kidnapped during a night vigil at St. John Catholic Church on February 11, 2026.
However, coordinated security operations later secured their safe release.
According to police authorities, intelligence-led operations led to the suspects’ arrest.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate.
Initial Arrests and Ammunition Recovery
According to DSP Udeme Edet, operatives first arrested two suspects on credible intelligence.
The suspects, Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim, were linked to the church kidnapping.
Furthermore, officers recovered five rounds of 7.62mm ammunition from them.
Subsequently, the suspects were transferred to the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team for further investigation.
This step, therefore, ensured compliance with established investigative procedures.
Joint Operation Yields More Arrests
On February 14, security operatives intensified their operations across Ado axis.
Consequently, the IRT and tactical teams raided the hideout of Ashiru Ibrahim.
During the raid, officers recovered one AK-47 rifle and eight rounds of ammunition.
In addition, two more suspects were arrested during the operation.
Investigators believe these suspects are key members of the kidnapping syndicate.
Victims Released Unhurt
Meanwhile, sustained search-and-rescue missions increased pressure on the criminal network.
As a result, the nine abducted worshippers were released unharmed.
Police confirmed that investigations established the suspects’ direct involvement in the crime.
Therefore, authorities assured residents that justice will be pursued diligently.
Police Deploy Air Surveillance, Reinforce Security
Following the incident, the Inspector General of Police approved the deployment of the Police Air Wing.
Additionally, more tactical teams were reinforced across Benue State.
According to the police, this proactive move will strengthen intelligence-led operations.
Moreover, it will deny criminal elements operational space within the state.
Commissioner Commends Inter-Agency Cooperation
The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, appreciated the state government’s support.
He also commended the leadership of the Catholic Diocese for promoting a non-kinetic approach.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the role of the Nigerian Army and Benue Civil Protection Guard.
According to him, this unified approach significantly contributed to the successful rescue.
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Ending Kidnapping
Finally, the police reassured residents of sustained security operations across the state.
They emphasized their resolve to eliminate kidnapping, banditry, cultism, and violent crimes.
Consequently, authorities urged residents to continue providing credible information to security agencies.
