The House of Representatives has enrolled accredited journalists covering its proceedings into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme. The initiative, sponsored by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi, ensures one-year health coverage for over 100 journalists. The symbolic presentation of enrollment identity cards took place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. This move highlights support for journalists’ welfare while advancing Nigeria’s goal of universal health coverage.
Health Insurance for Journalists: Why It Matters
Grace Ike, Chairperson of the FCT Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, emphasized that health insurance protects media professionals from risks and stress. She said,
“Journalists work under tight deadlines, constant mobility, and exposure to hazards. Healthy journalists are better able to deliver clear, courageous, and professional reporting.”
Ike added that the programme strengthens democratic engagement by supporting those who provide credible information to the public.
Legislative Leaders Applaud the Initiative
Gboyega Onadiran, Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, described the enrollment as a practical step toward universal health coverage. He stated,
“Health insurance shields families from catastrophic medical expenses. A healthy press is vital for a healthy democracy.”
Chike Okafor, Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, called the intervention historic. He praised the 10th Assembly for its proactive role in journalists’ welfare.
Affordable Coverage and Social Impact
Dolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, explained that the scheme offers quality healthcare at an annual premium of ₦22,500 per person. Represented by Permanent Secretary Baba-Gaba Adam, she highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the “Adopt and Enroll” programme, encouraging sponsorship of health insurance for others.
Fasawe noted:
“This gesture demonstrates exemplary leadership, compassion, and commitment to journalists’ welfare.”
She acknowledged that reporters often work late hours and prioritize duties over personal health. The scheme ensures they receive care without financial burden.
Rotimi’s Commitment to Media Welfare
Akin Rotimi stated the initiative reflects the 10th Assembly’s dedication to media engagement and reporter wellbeing. He credited Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for backing the move, recognizing the Press Corps’ indispensable role in legislative processes. Rotimi added:
“This step encourages others to sponsor health coverage, reducing out-of-pocket spending and promoting a productive society.”
