Governor Umar Namadi Danmodi of Jigawa State has launched the J Basic Healthcare Services for Vulnerable Citizens, a programme that provides free healthcare to the elderly and children under five. Initiated in 2025, it covers 143,500 beneficiaries across all 287 political wards. The initiative aims to reduce healthcare costs, protect vulnerable citizens, and strengthen social stability. By involving community leaders and civil society organizations, the programme ensures transparency and fairness in delivering care.
Compassionate Governance in Action
At a time when rising healthcare costs push families into poverty, Jigawa’s initiative shows the power of empathy-driven policy. Ordinary citizens feel its impact daily:
- Elderly farmers manage chronic illnesses without worrying about bills.
- Grandmothers visit clinics independently of their children.
- Children receive timely treatment, ensuring a healthier future.
These small but meaningful changes build a stronger society. Healthy citizens contribute more productively, and productive citizens strengthen the economy.
Restoring Dignity for the Elderly
For many elderly citizens, aging brings frailty and rising medical costs. Years of hard work often leave them financially vulnerable. By guaranteeing free healthcare for citizens aged 65 and above, Jigawa restores dignity to their twilight years.
The programme reflects fairness and ambition, enrolling 500 beneficiaries per ward to reach all communities. Elderly citizens now access primary and secondary healthcare facilities without financial strain, preserving their role as custodians of memory and family wisdom.
Protecting Children Under Five
The initiative equally focuses on the youngest citizens. Early childhood is critical, and untreated illnesses can affect lifelong health. By offering free healthcare to children under five, Jigawa ensures that young lives start on a strong, healthy foundation.
This balance demonstrates a deep understanding of social development: caring for the oldest while protecting the youngest creates stronger families and resilient communities.
Building Trust Through Transparency
Transparency is key to the programme’s success. Community leaders, civil society organizations, and healthcare workers help identify beneficiaries fairly. This grassroots approach strengthens public confidence and ensures that aid reaches the people who need it most.
Comprehensive Healthcare Investments
Beyond J Basic Healthcare, Jigawa State invests in broader reforms:
- Revitalizing primary healthcare centers.
- Constructing new general hospitals.
- Providing specialized services, such as free dialysis for renal patients.
These efforts form a holistic strategy to improve public health and expand access to quality medical services across the state.
Leadership With Compassion
Governor Namadi Danmodi emphasizes that the programme is not charity, but a duty of leadership. Caring for the elderly stabilizes families, strengthens communities, and preserves dignity. Similarly, protecting children ensures future generations thrive.
Jigawa’s approach demonstrates that true progress is measured by the wellbeing of citizens, not merely economic growth or infrastructure. By safeguarding both ends of life, the state plants seeds for a healthier, more humane tomorrow.
