Tragedy struck Ibelebiri in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Wednesday afternoon when a fuel tanker collided with a tricycle, killing four schoolchildren and the driver along the Ibelebiri stretch of the Yenegwe–Okarki–Otuasega road. The victims were returning from school when the tanker, suspected to have suffered brake failure, skidded off the road and rammed into the parked tricycle, crushing its occupants before they could escape.
The fatal crash threw the quiet farming and fishing community into deep mourning.
How the Crash Happened
Eyewitnesses said the tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep, had parked near the children’s residence. One pupil had crossed the road and entered the house moments before impact.
However, the tanker, bearing the logo of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, lost control and veered off the road. It slammed into the tricycle and crushed those inside instantly.
Residents said the children attended a school in Otuasega Community. The driver, a family member, regularly transported them.
Driver Flees, Conductor Arrested
The tanker driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Meanwhile, military personnel apprehended the conductor and handed him over to the police.
An officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission commended community youths for maintaining calm. The officer, who spoke anonymously, praised them for securing the tanker and preventing further violence.
Police Confirm Investigation
Musa Mohammed, spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He said authorities have launched a full investigation into the crash.
Police urged residents to remain peaceful as investigators work to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Community in Mourning
The Ibelebiri community now mourns the loss of four promising children and a dedicated driver. Residents have called for stricter safety checks on heavy-duty vehicles operating along the busy Yenegwe–Okarki–Otuasega road.
The tragic incident highlights growing concerns over tanker safety and roadworthiness in Bayelsa State.
