Iran Protests: Officials Report Over 3,000 Deaths Amid US-Iran Tensions

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Iranian officials have confirmed over 3,000 deaths during nationwide protests in December and January, claiming “terrorist acts” fueled by the United States and Israel caused the violence. Meanwhile, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reports more than 7,000 deaths, suggesting the true toll is higher.

US Accuses Iran of Mass Killings

During his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump claimed Iranian authorities killed 32,000 people during the protests. He warned that Iran continues to pursue “sinister nuclear ambitions” despite repeated denials from Tehran. Trump also reiterated that the United States would never allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon.

Iran Denies Nuclear Weapon Intentions

Iran has consistently rejected claims of seeking a nuclear weapon. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized in a February interview with Al Jazeera that Tehran lacks the capability to strike the US. However, he warned Iran would retaliate against American bases in the Middle East if Washington launched an attack.

Tehran Dismisses US Missile Claims

Iran’s foreign ministry on Wednesday labeled US allegations about its missile program as “big lies.” Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated on X that accusations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and casualties from January unrest are false.

Conflicting Death Toll Reports

While Iranian officials report just over 3,000 deaths, HRANA recorded more than 7,000 deaths during the protests. Observers warn that the actual number could be significantly higher, highlighting ongoing human rights concerns.
