The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that candidates can wear hijabs during registration. The board issued the statement on Saturday in response to a viral video alleging discrimination at Afe Babalola University (ABUAD). A social media user claimed his sister was asked to remove her hijab before biometric capture. JAMB explained that the guideline only requires candidates’ ears to be visible for identification. The board stressed that the rule applies to all candidates and protects the integrity of biometric data.
JAMB Hijab Policy Clarification
JAMB said it has never directed candidates to remove their hijabs. According to the board, the allegation misrepresented its registration guidelines.
A user identified as AsakyGRN shared a video online. In the clip, he claimed officials asked his sister to remove her hijab before taking her photograph. He also alleged that she signed an undertaking for wearing the hijab.
However, JAMB dismissed the claim of discrimination. The board reaffirmed its respect for religious freedom.
Biometric Requirement Explained
JAMB stated that its guideline requires both ears to be visible during photo capture. This rule supports accurate facial recognition and identification.
The board compared the process to international passport and visa applications. Embassies worldwide follow similar biometric standards.
Importantly, JAMB clarified that candidates do not need to remove their hijabs. Instead, they can adjust the hijab to show their ears during the photograph.
Why the Candidate Signed an Undertaking
JAMB explained that the candidate declined to comply with the ear-visibility guideline. As a result, officials asked her to document her decision in writing.
The board said this step ensures transparency and prevents future misrepresentation. Afterward, officials completed her registration successfully.
Therefore, JAMB maintained that it respected her religious choice throughout the process.
2026 UTME Registration Timeline
Meanwhile, JAMB has commenced registration for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB Urges Public to Avoid Misinformation
Finally, JAMB urged the public to verify information before sharing it online. The board emphasized that mutual understanding will help it serve all candidates fairly.
JAMB reaffirmed its commitment to respecting candidates’ rights, beliefs, and backgrounds.
