Former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Jumoke Akinjide, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State. She announced her decision on Monday in a letter to her ward chairman in Ona-Ara Local Government Area. Akinjide cited personal reflection as the reason for leaving. The move raises strong speculation about her possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akinjide Explains Reason for Resignation
In her resignation letter, Akinjide described the decision as difficult. However, she said careful reflection led her to act.
“I hereby formally give you notice of my resignation as a member of the PDP, effective immediately,” she stated.
She also appreciated the opportunities the party gave her. In addition, she acknowledged the relationships she built over the years. She then wished the party success in the future.
Political Career and Public Service
Akinjide has held several key government roles. She served as Minister of State for the FCT under former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2011 to 2015.
In 2014, she briefly acted as Supervising Minister for Police Affairs. Earlier, she worked as Special Assistant to the President on FCT Matters. She also handled G77 Matters and Nigerians in the Diaspora between 2001 and 2003.
Longstanding PDP Membership Ends
Akinjide joined the PDP in 2001. Therefore, her exit ends over two decades of political affiliation with the party. She described the move as emotional but necessary.
Notably, she is the daughter of late legal icon Richard Akinjide. Her political influence has remained significant in Oyo State.
Possible Defection to APC
Although she did not confirm her next move, strong indications suggest she may join the APC. Political observers believe her experience could strengthen the ruling party’s structure in Oyo State.
Meanwhile, PDP stakeholders have yet to respond officially to her resignation.
