Kidnapped Cocoa Farmers Regain Freedom After Ransom Payment in Ogun

By Elizabeth Ugbo

All five kidnapped cocoa farmers regained freedom on Thursday in Ogun State after their families paid ransom, according to the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN). The victims were abducted last Wednesday during a visit to the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Ibadan. Security agencies and local authorities confirmed the release, which occurred between midnight and 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

CFAN Confirms Release of Remaining Victims

The Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN) announced that the final group of abducted members has been released.

In a statement, National President Comrade Adeola Adegoke explained that families secured their freedom after meeting kidnappers’ demands.

Earlier, two victims—Apostle William Solomon and Rufus Megbowon—regained freedom on health grounds. The association described their release as a “divine arrangement.”

However, CFAN dismissed claims that security operatives rescued the remaining victims. Instead, the group confirmed that ransom payment led to their release.

Timeline of the Kidnapping Incident

The farmers were abducted during a familiarisation visit to CRIN in Ibadan.

Following the incident, security agencies launched coordinated efforts to locate and free the victims.

Days later, two victims were released due to health concerns. Subsequently, the remaining victims regained freedom after negotiations.

Security Agencies and Local Authorities React

Chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area, Akeem Olatunji, confirmed the victims’ release during a telephone interview.

He stated that multiple security agencies worked together throughout the operation. These included the Police, DSS, Amotekun Corps, and local vigilante groups.

Moreover, he noted that officials handed the victims over to the police after their release.

The operation was coordinated by the Security Adviser to the Oyo State Governor, retired Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni.

Council Chairman Commends Security Efforts

The council chairman praised security operatives for their swift response.

He also reassured residents of continued collaboration with relevant agencies to protect lives and property.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of community vigilance in preventing future incidents.
