Kwankwaso Dumps NNPP, Joins ADC in Major Political Realignment

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). He will officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, March 30, 2026. The registration will take place at 12pm at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano. Kwankwaso cited political realignment as the reason for his move. He also directed his supporters to follow him into the new party.

Kwankwasiyya Movement Confirms Defection

The Kwankwasiyya Movement confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday night. The spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Mohammad, signed the statement.

According to him, the movement has completed all arrangements for Kwankwaso’s defection. He stated that the decision aligns with current political realities in Nigeria.

Why Kwankwaso Left NNPP

Kwankwaso explained that the nation’s political direction requires strategic repositioning. Therefore, he chose a platform that offers stronger prospects for national change.

He admitted the decision was difficult. However, he stressed that it became necessary for the future of his political vision.

Appreciation to NNPP Leadership

Kwankwaso thanked the NNPP leadership for their support. He specifically appreciated the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the National Working Committee.

In addition, he acknowledged the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and grassroots members. He praised their commitment to the party’s mission.

Directive to Loyalists

Following his resignation, Kwankwaso instructed his loyalists to decamp with him. This move aims to consolidate his political influence within the ADC.

Observers believe this shift could reshape opposition politics ahead of future elections.

What This Means for Nigeria’s Political Landscape

Kwankwaso’s defection signals a major realignment in Nigeria’s opposition space. It may strengthen the ADC’s national presence.

Furthermore, the move could influence voter dynamics and coalition-building efforts across the country.
