Nigeria clarifies scope of defence partnership
The Defence Headquarters Nigeria has clarified the scope of Nigeria’s defence cooperation with the United States. During a Twitter Space discussion organised by Sunday Dare, spokesperson Major General SM Uba explained that the partnership centres on military training, intelligence sharing, and technical support to strengthen Nigeria’s security capacity. He also stressed that the cooperation does not involve establishing a United States military base in Nigeria.
No plans for U.S. military base in Nigeria
Major General Uba dismissed speculation about a U.S. military base in Nigeria.
He stated clearly that the partnership focuses strictly on professional training and operational development.
“The partnership between Nigeria and the United States does not imply the establishment of a United States military base in Nigeria,” Uba said.
He added that Nigeria maintains full control over its defence decisions and policies.
Partnership supports military professionalism
According to the Defence Headquarters, the cooperation improves the professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The partnership includes:
- Joint military training exercises
- Technical collaboration
- Intelligence sharing programmes
These initiatives allow Nigerian troops to learn global best practices. As a result, military personnel strengthen their operational efficiency.
Tinubu administration backs international security partnerships
During the discussion, presidential spokesman Sunday Dare reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen Nigeria’s defence system.
He explained that strategic partnerships support the modernisation of Nigeria’s armed forces. Moreover, they help improve training, equipment usage, and operational readiness.
Dare emphasised that stronger military capability remains essential for addressing emerging security threats.
International cooperation seen as key to modern security
Participants in the discussion highlighted the growing importance of global security cooperation.
Modern threats such as terrorism, insurgency, and banditry often cross national borders. Therefore, countries increasingly rely on partnerships to respond effectively.
Nigeria uses these collaborations to strengthen its military while protecting national sovereignty.
Defence collaborations guided by national interest
The Defence Headquarters reiterated that all defence partnerships serve Nigeria’s national interest.
According to Uba, the knowledge-sharing programmes help Nigerian troops adopt international best practices.
Consequently, the armed forces can respond more effectively to threats such as:
- Terrorism
- Insurgency
- Banditry
- Transnational organised crime
The military leadership stressed that every cooperation agreement respects Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Nigeria maintains several defence partnerships
The Defence Headquarters also noted that Nigeria holds similar defence partnerships with several countries.
These collaborations form part of Nigeria’s long-term strategy to strengthen military professionalism and operational capacity.
Through such partnerships, Nigeria continues to develop a capable and responsive armed force while maintaining full authority over its defence policies.
