Nigerian Army Chief calls for discipline and unity
The Waidi Shaibu, on Saturday in Abuja, urged Nigerian soldiers to remain disciplined, united and committed to defending the country. Shaibu made the call during a joint breaking of fast for Muslim and Christian personnel observing Ramadan and Lent. He emphasised the Army’s duty to confront terrorism, insurgency and banditry across Nigeria.
Shared fasting strengthens unity in the Army
Shaibu said the convergence of Ramadan and Lent reflects shared values across faiths. According to him, both spiritual seasons promote sacrifice, discipline, compassion and reflection.
He explained that the joint breaking of fast symbolises unity among soldiers from different religious backgrounds. Therefore, the moment reinforces the bond among troops serving one nation and one mission.
Troops remain active across security theatres
The Army chief noted that thousands of troops remain deployed nationwide. They continue operations against terrorism, insurgency and criminal violence.
“In the North-East, our forces continue the relentless fight against terrorism and insurgency,” Shaibu said.
He also highlighted operations in the North-West and parts of the North-Central. There, troops confront banditry and other criminal threats.
Furthermore, he praised soldiers observing Ramadan and Lent while serving in demanding operational environments. He described their resilience and professionalism as the finest qualities of the Nigerian Army.
Welfare of soldiers remains top priority
Shaibu stressed that leadership and sound administration remain central to his command philosophy. He said troop welfare will remain the Army’s top priority.
“I am determined to make troops’ welfare our topmost priority,” he said.
He explained that the strength of the Nigerian Army depends on the well-being, morale and readiness of its soldiers.
Tribute to fallen heroes and presidential support
The Army chief paid tribute to officers and soldiers who died defending the country. He assured that the nation would never forget their sacrifices.
Shaibu also thanked Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He reaffirmed the Army’s loyalty to the President and its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy, peace and territorial integrity.
Army leadership emphasises unity and respect
Earlier, the Chief of Administration (Army), Isa Abdullahi, said the joint fast-breaking symbolised solidarity among soldiers.
He explained that the gathering promotes mutual respect among personnel of different faiths.
The event brought together senior military officers, soldiers, clergy members, invited guests and media representatives.
