Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has placed troops on high alert across the country ahead of Easter celebrations. The directive was announced on Tuesday in Abuja by Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations. He explained that the move aims to prevent security breaches during the festive period. The military also highlighted ongoing collaboration with the United States to strengthen counter-terrorism operations. Authorities expect the impact of this partnership to become visible in the coming weeks.
Troops Intensify Surveillance Nationwide
The DHQ has directed all military personnel to remain vigilant throughout the Easter period. According to Onoja, festive seasons often attract increased security threats.
He noted that adversaries may attempt to exploit public celebrations. Therefore, troops have received clear instructions to stay alert at all times.
“We will not relax during this period. Security remains our top priority,” he stated.
Additionally, he assured Nigerians that the same level of preparedness used during Christmas and Eid-el-Fitr remains in place.
US Military Support Strengthens Operations
Onoja confirmed that the United States continues to provide intelligence and training support to Nigerian forces. This assistance focuses on counter-terrorism efforts and strategic operations.
He explained that the collaboration includes critical intelligence on the location of hostile elements. As a result, Nigerian troops can respond more effectively to threats.
However, he stressed that military operations require time to yield results.
“There is a gestation period. You may not see results immediately, but the impact will soon be felt,” he said.
Deployment of US Personnel in Nigeria
On February 16, 2026, the DHQ confirmed the arrival of about 100 US military personnel at Bauchi Airfield. These personnel are not combat troops.
Instead, they provide technical support, advisory services, and training to Nigerian forces. The military described the arrangement as being on favourable terms.
Despite this, insecurity has persisted in parts of the country. This situation has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the collaboration.
Military Assures Nigerians of Safety
Onoja reassured citizens that security agencies remain fully committed to protecting lives and property. He emphasized that troops will maintain a high level of readiness throughout the celebrations.
He also warned that security forces understand the tactics used by hostile groups during festive periods.
“We know threats expect us to relax, but we will not. Everything will be okay this Easter,” he assured.
Expected Impact of US-Nigeria Collaboration
The DHQ remains confident that ongoing US support will strengthen military operations. Intelligence sharing and training are expected to improve response strategies.
Although results may not be immediate, officials believe the benefits will soon become evident nationwide.
