Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Dream in Jeopardy After FIFA Rejects NFF Petition

By Elizabeth Ugbo

Nigeria has suffered a setback in its 2026 World Cup qualification hopes after FIFA rejected a petition from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in 2026. The NFF challenged the eligibility of some players fielded by Democratic Republic of the Congo during the 2026 World Cup African play-off in Rabat, Morocco, last November. The protest followed Nigeria’s 4-3 penalty defeat. FIFA ruled against the complaint due to insufficient evidence on passport irregularities. Consequently, the NFF has confirmed it will appeal the decision while Nigeria continues preparations for upcoming international fixtures.

FIFA Rejects NFF Eligibility Petition

FIFA’s disciplinary body dismissed Nigeria’s protest after reviewing submitted documents.
The NFF argued that DR Congo players had irregular passport issues.
However, FIFA found no strong proof to overturn the match result.

Meanwhile, the loss remains painful for Nigeria.
The penalty shootout defeat ended their direct World Cup hopes.

NFF Confirms Appeal Against Decision

The Nigeria Football Federation reacted quickly to FIFA’s ruling.
It stated that the decision was not acceptable.
Therefore, it has begun the appeal process immediately.

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi confirmed the move.
He insisted Nigeria will continue to pursue justice through official channels.

Super Eagles Shift Focus to International Friendlies

The Nigeria national football team have now turned attention to friendly matches.
They are currently in Türkiye for a four-nation tournament.

The team will face Iran on March 27.
They will also play Jordan on March 31.

In addition, security concerns forced a venue change from Amman.
The tournament now offers Nigeria a chance to rebuild momentum.

Squad Update and Key Players

Coach Eric Chelle has named a 22-man squad for the games.
Several key players remain unavailable due to injuries.

Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey are sidelined.
However, Ademola Lookman leads the attack alongside experienced stars.

Wilfred Ndidi captains the team with stability in midfield.
Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and Samuel Chukwueze also provide experience.

New players like Collins Yira and Emmanuel Fernandez bring fresh energy.
Therefore, the squad blends youth and experience.

Nigeria’s Road to Rebuilding Confidence

Nigeria finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Now, the focus shifts to rebuilding team chemistry.

The friendly tournament offers tactical testing opportunities.
It also helps assess new squad depth ahead of future qualifiers.

Although World Cup hopes are uncertain, the Super Eagles remain active.
Fans still expect strong performances and long-term progress.
